1993 saw the same teams that faced each other in the League Cup Final line up again at Wembley for the FA Cup Final as Sheffield Wednesday faced Arsenal. Both teams were enjoying a revival in fortunes, with George Graham leading Arsenal to the League Cup in 1987 and then League Champions in 1989 and 1991 after years in the doledrums, but they hadn't won the FA Cup since 1979. For Wednesday it was even longer - 1935, to be exact - but they had quickly won promotion and the League Cup in 1991, finished 3rd in 1992 and now were in both cup finals, including their 1st FA Cup Final since 1966. Arsenal had won their League Cup meeting, but pundits predicted a tight game with little to choose from on who would come out on top, and that is how it panned out. The Gunners had Ian Wright, Paul Merson, Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Kevin Campbell and David Seaman, plus a soon to be retiring David O'Leary, who had been at the club for 20 years. Wednesday meanwhile had Mark Bright, Chris Waddle, Paul Warhurst, Roland Nielsson, David Hirst and Viv Anderson, with Chris Woods between the sticks. And both sides gave it their all in a keenly contested and committed final.
This is probably the last of the FA Cup Finals to feel like an old fashioned Cup Final, and makes it all the more intriguing to watch now. This is from an old recording of mine, as my Pap was a Sheffield Wednesday fan, so apologies for the picture quality or any glitches there may be. As you can guess, the match ends a draw, but I do not have the replay for obvious reasons. But as not many drawn Cup Finals are ever available in full to watch, I thought this might be of interest to some, and also to Wednesday fans who can watch their team during their glory era and enjoy the game, rather than having to watch the replay. And I'm sure this game has interest for Arsenal fans as well.
