The 1990 FA Cup Semi Final between Crystal Palace and Liverpool had already seen a 7 goal thriller eventually won in extra time, but nobody would of believed that the extraordinary day of April 8th 1990 would see the drama continue in this seemingly mismatched pairing between fallen giants Manchester United - struggling under Alex Ferguson against relegation and without a trophy for 4 years - and 2nd Division Oldham Athletic, who were on a 3 pronged bid for promotion to the Top Flight, and had already reached the League Cup Final before making it to only their 2nd s-f since 1913 in their bid to reach their 1st ever FA Cup Final. Despite their struggles, United were expected to make short work of Oldham, but the Latics had clearly not read the script and in a game that was just as good as the previous semi they would serve up an incredible 3-3 thriller in what was 13 goals over both semi finals!
This video was compiled together from an upload on Youtube by Elsmwood48 and contains the entire original broadcast of that game on Grandstand, including pre match comments by Des Lynam and Jimmy Hill, halftime analysis and review of the extraordinary events of the other s-f, and post match summary. As with both matches, they were recorded live from the TV, so will contain glitches in the picture at times. For Oldham Athletic, currently struggling in the 4th tier of English football, this is a welcome reminder of their glory days and cup heroics in the early 1990's.
