The L.A. Choral Lab performs "The Human Journey" by Jeffrey Bernstein. This piece was commissioned by the L.A. Choral Lab as part of "Missa Urbis Angelorum", a six-movement compositional cycle to which six Los Angeles-based composers each contributed one movement. "Missa Urbis Angelorum" translates as "Mass of the City of Angels"; the cycle is the L.A. Choral Lab's contribution to the centuries-long tradition of the musical Mass.
Recorded live at Zipper Concert Hall, downtown Los Angeles, California, Sunday, March 22, 2015.

THE HUMAN JOURNEY
text by Jeffrey Bernstein
I believe this version of events:
We are spirit beings
On this human journey.
Spirit from spirit,
Light from light,
Our true home is elsewhere.
There is spirit in everything:
Our beautiful Earth,
This garden of lovingkindness,
Where we are called
To ease each other's suffering.
By some impulse each of us
Chose a human birth,
A place on Earth, a family.
Shaking and shimmering,
We descended into time,
We became human.
Choosing a life on Earth,
Each of us chose to live,
To suffer and to die.
Our dying is a beginning,
Our journey away from Earth,
Our journey home.
Life will endure forever
In its great ininitude
Beautiful, brilliant,
Beyond imagining.
Though it feels lonely
You have nothing to fear.
Dios te tenga en su santo mano.
Amen.
