Stefano Bollani - Black And Tan Fantasy (2006)
The second of the twin albums recorded over two days in July 2002 features Stefano Bollani's fresh and daraing interpretations of American jazz tunes, four of which are written by Duke Ellington or Billy Strayhorn. The first album that featured Italian tunes, Volare, had been issued by Venus Records a bit earlier, and together, these two albums firmly established Bollani's status as a notable jazz musician in many Japanese jazz fans' minds.
Bollani and his Italian rhythm section interacts on equal footing, as is often the case with many modern piano trios, and Bollani's arrangements and improvisations breathe new life into these familiar tunes. He applies different rhythms and tackles the melody from many different angles.
