👽𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙘 * 𝙎𝙘𝙞-𝙁𝙞 * 𝙃𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧 * 𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙨 👽 Perseus must battle Medusa and the Kraken to save the Princess Andromeda. Perseus (Harry Hamlin) is the favored son of the god Zeus (Sir Laurence Olivier), but he has unwittingly ticked off the sea goddess Thetis (Dame Maggie Smith). Just to make things worse, Perseus falls in love with the lovely Princess Andromeda (Judi Bowker), who used to be engaged to Thetis' son, Calibos (Neil McCarthy). Soon Perseus is off on one quest after another, with Zeus helping, Thetis hindering, and lots of innocent bystanders getting stabbed, drowned, and squished.
Movie Trivia
Harry Hamlin and Ursula Andress began a relationship during production. Their son, Dimitri Hamlin, was born in 1980 after completion of principal photography.
Sir Laurence Olivier was so ill during the making of the film, he would often go and lean on his tall, burly co-star Pat Roach, saying, "Let me draw some of your strength, dear boy."
The original script called for Perseus to cut off Medusa's head simply by throwing his shield at her in an attempt to appease U.K. Standards and Practices censors, as the producers felt that the hero decapitating someone would not be appropriate for children in the audience. Harry Hamlin apparently was resistant to the idea from the beginning, as it wasn't in keeping with the actual Greek mythology. When the day came to film the scene, and it still hadn't been changed, he threatened to quit the movie and fly home. He remained in his trailer, much to the annoyance of producers Charles H. Schneer and Ray Harryhausen (also creator of special visual effects), and director Desmond Davis. Hamlin was gradually able to get some of the other crew members on his side, which resulted in the scene being rewritten accordingly.
