Johnny Fortune (Damon Lowry) is an irrepressible 17-year-old, an obstinate dreamer and an artless prisoner of hope.
Surrounded by violence and dishonesty, Johnny lives with Kate (Charlotte Coleman). Kate is young, tough and determined to survive. But in this uncertain world where greed and cynicism flourish and where personal relationships are kept secret, they live together in a virtual hideout.
But Johnny messes up. He loses a lot of money. Kate's money.
Alone and penniless, Johnny answers an advert in the paper 'Entertainer Requires Assistant'. He is employed as a dancing bear by an unconventional Punch & Judy man. But Johnny's past catches up with him nevertheless, as he unwittingly uncovers the secrets of those around him, with disastrous consequences.
