Part 3 of 4 of the period drama. Molly faces losing Roger, both to stepsister Cynthia in their engagement, and to Africa on tour as part of his scientific expedition. However, she finds her attentions diverted elsewhere when Osborne Hamley tells her of the secret he has been keeping. He tells her of his secret marriage to Aimee and how he cannot tell his father because she is French and his attitude towards the French. But it is not the only secret he is keeping and when Hyacinth overhears a conversation her husband is having she plots another course for her daughter's future. However, Cynthia has her own secret which she confesses to Molly, but when she asks Molly to help she only succeeds in compromising Molly's own reputation.
Starring Justine Waddell, Keeley Hawes, Francesca Annis, Bill Paterson, Michael Gambon, Tom Hollander, Iain Glen, Barbara Flynn, Deborah Findley, Emily McKenzie, Anthony Howell, Tonia Chauvet, Richard Coyle, Elizabeth Spriggs and Tim Waller. This is from my own collection and is an adaptation by Andrew Davies - he of Pride and Prejudice fame - from the last novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, who died before it could be completed. This has never been repeated since it's broadcast in November - December 1999, so is a rare find indeed.
