#29 Australian Charts.. George Baker was actually a guy called Johannes Bouwens who was born on 8 December 1944 in a town called Hoorn in North Holland. He joined a band called Soul Invention which would later change its name to the George Baker Selection with Bouwens taking the name George Baker from a character in a detective novel. They would see 3 US chart hits and 1 UK chart hit. In The Netherlands they would manage 5 hits with ‘Paloma Blanca’ going to number 1 for 4 weeks. It would also top the charts in at least 8 other countries. SA band Tamaletjie would score a hit with ‘My Klein Witte Duifie’, an Afrikaans version of ‘Paloma Blanca’.
The George Baker Selection were 1 of only 2 Dutch acts to see 2 number 1 hits. The other act was Pussycat who managed a total of 10 weeks at 1, while The George Baker Selection had the second highest weeks at 1 figure for acts from The Netherlands as they manged 7. ‘Baby Blue’ was the second best performing song by a Dutch act using both a top 20 and a top 30 basis. It was only beaten by Pussycat’s ‘Mississippi’. In 1978, the George Baker Selection split up because "the pressure had become too much." The band has sold over 20 million records worldwide. George Baker formed a new George Baker Selection in 1982, which stayed together until 1989. The band has released twelve albums and several compilation albums.
