Part 1 of 5 of the 1982 adaptation of the Victorian mystery by Wlike Collins. Walter Hartright encounters a mysterious woman in white one night while walking in Hampstead Heath. Agitated and afraid of something, he later overhears that she has escaped from an asylum. But she stays in Walter's mind due to the mention of Limmeridge House, where by chance he has been engaged by Frederick Fairlie to tutor his two nieces, Laura Fairlie and Marion Halcombe. Gradually he falls in love with Laura, but is forlorn when he discovers she is engaged to be married to a Percival Glyde. But as her marriage approaches, it turns out not to be the last he hears from the woman in white...
Starring Daniel Gerrold, Diana Quick, Ian Rcihardson, Jenny Seagrove, John Shrapnel, Diedra Morris, Milo Sherber, Anna Wing, Ann Queensbury, Alan Dudley, Gladis Robinson and Anna Lindup. There have been a number of adaptations of this novel, but the 1982 version is considered by many to be the definitive version. Having read the novel myself, I have to say that none of them come close to the book, including this version, but the 1982 version does benefit from the appearance (in episode 2 onwards) of Alan Badel, who gives a memorable performance as Count Fosco, despite not physically fitting the description in the book. It also features Ian Richardson, who appears in both the 1982 and 1997 version of the mystery. This upload, I may add, comes from a video of the series I found once in a charity shop, so apologies for any glitches there may be.
