Depeche Mode. Reimagined. (DM.R.) is a fan project. This is an homage to the artists. This song speaks about collective moral and societal collaps. The feeling that we (as a society, not just individuals) know things are broken but are either complicit, apathetic, or too exhausted to fix them. Disillusionment with humanity Lines like “our souls are corrupt” and “our consciences bankrupt” point to a belief that greed, hypocrisy, and self-interest have hollowed people out. It’s not ignorance. It’s knowing better and still failing. Loss of standards and integrity “Our standards are sinking” and “our dignity has sailed” suggest we’ve normalized things that once would’ve been unacceptable. Politically, socially, morally. Hopelessness and burnout The repeated questioning (“Do we call this trying?” “How are we coping?”) feels exhausted rather than angry. There’s a sense that even hope feels naïve now. Distrust in justice and truth The idea that justice won’t prevail and truth won’t “tip the scales” reflects cynicism toward institutions, governments, media, systems of power, that are supposed to protect fairness but don’t. Collective responsibility The repeated word “People” is important. It’s accusatory, but also inclusive. The speaker isn’t standing above everyone else, they’re implicated too.
