In this video Ashwani Thakur explains how to answer the interview question: What are your salary expectations?
This is a part of our "Best Job Interview Answer" series.
The 1st advice I would like to give you is that do not feel shy and never feel or show that you are not sure about it
In fact if you are actually not sure about the salary that you should expect then please be sure about it.
You must know what is the industry standard for the position that you are applying. It also depends on your qualification & experience. So do your research both online and offline and have a number in your mind.
But! Never disclose that number in an interview. Now why you should not say a number. To explain that I will create another video but for now just remember “you should never tell the exact salary that’s on your mind”
I would also like to tell you why the employer wants to know your salary expectations.
The reason is that every company has a salary slab or you may understand it as a range of minimum to maximum what they can pay for any position.
So they always try to know if your expectations fall in their slab and how much can they negotiate.
If you give a very low number as compared to their slab they may think you are not talented enough and if you give a very high number they may straightaway reject you as they may not even feel like doing a negotiation.
The best way to answer this question is to politely leave the decision to them. So you might be thinking what’s the correct way to say it so here it is:
Just mention that your main priority is to work in XYZ or join your organization and you are very excited to join. You can say, I am open and flexible when it comes to the salary. For you adding value to the company with your skills and expertise is more important than salary. Then you must mention that “I am sure you have a salary slab for this position and you are the best judge to offer me the best compensation for my services”
Use your own words but the meaning should be what I just said and after speaking let them give you the number and if that number is less than your expected number please go ahead and negotiate because what they offer is never the maximum in that slab. Remind them about your qualification, experience and tell why you are a better choice.
And if the number looks good to you, just smile and ignore as if you don’t care. Behave as if getting the job is more important for you not the salary.
One Last Important Advice:
Never act like you are too desperate for the job. And you have a lot of responsibilities ill mom, small kids or anything. I mean anything that tells that you just need this job. Because the employer in that case would either offer you the lowest number in their slab or they may just not hire you. Because they do not need someone who is desperate. But someone who is deserving. So show your excitement and interest but not desperation.
